Where low ceilings in period properties and cottages add character and charm, they can feel claustrophobic in featureless modern properties. Smaller rooms can get away with small ceilings but just plain. The trick is to disguise the lower ceiling and take the eye away from it, or flaunt it and draw the eye to it.

Camouflage: Play with the proportions of the room: create an optical illusion of height by lowering the level of the environment. Choose sofas, armchairs, tables that are closer to floor level and more well-groomed in shape. Floor cushions and furniture from the Far East will work well. Adding a discreet panel to the walls - just below the standard skid height - will enhance the illusion of height. Paint it to match the walls so it's not too noticeable.

Let it create a sense of depth. Expand colors and textures that recede. Glass floors - or glass panels in a solid floor - are ideal because they reflect light. Or consider any glossy floor surface in a cool, receding color: reflections from the finish of stained floorboards or concrete will add movement to the floor and draw an eye.

Blend the ceiling into the walls by painting them in the same color. For a retro look, suspend items from the ceiling to float just above floor level: a team of three pendant lights hung at different heights in a corner of the room. Paint the ceiling midnight blue, add a few fixtures of light, contemplate one or more walls from floor to ceiling, and keep the floors dark and slightly shiny.

The washed light will accentuate any flaws in the ceiling finish - re-plastering may be required.

More modern contemporary homes have ceilings that are around 2m, while older properties have ceilings that are 3m or higher. This can make it difficult to have suspension or drops in a newer property style due to the height limitation. The answer may be low-ceiling lighting that adapts comfortably to its mounting. It usually has a central drop or stem on which levers are mounted. They typically range from 150mm to 350mm, making them ideal for illuminating rooms with lower ceilings.

The great thing about low ceiling downlights is that they can be used anywhere. On high ceilings, they can be a feature while being less intrusive. Mounted on a landing or stairwell, a large translucent light can look spectacular as the eye travels up the stairs to the fitting above. More traditional ceiling lights can come in glass shades fitted with up or down incandescent bulbs and are ideal for low ceilings. It is important to remember that both will give a different effect. An upward pointing bulb will bounce off the ceiling and back into the room, providing a softer diffused light, while a downward pointing bulb will give a more direct and therefore brighter light. It's also worth remembering that you can see the bulb in the down fitting so that opal or soft tone bulbs can be used.
