All adjustments of plastic windows. How to tighten plastic windows so that there is no draft - we adjust the windows ourselves. The sash does not fit tightly to the frame

Plastic windows have become very popular due to their qualities: good noise and heat insulation, protection from drafts and low price. They are installed during new construction, and they also replace old wooden windows with plastic ones.

Since the installation of plastic windows is very simple, anyone can install them themselves.

The only thing is that you must follow all installation instructions so that the window is installed correctly and lasts a long time.

It is important to keep the fittings clean, then they will last a long time. Especially a lot of debris collects from above after the window, platbands for plastic windows are installed and the slopes are finished. This debris should be removed immediately after all work has been completed.

The fittings that come with the windows are of high quality and ensure trouble-free operation throughout the entire operation of the plastic windows, if the windows were initially installed in a high-quality manner.

But over time, some problems are possible: drafts appear, noise from the street penetrates, and sometimes windows and doors begin to open with difficulty. The reasons for this may be different:

  • horizontal and vertical adjustments were not made initially;
  • natural wear and tear of structures;
  • sagging of the valves;
  • seal wear;
  • loose clamping of the sashes, etc.

You can fix these problems yourself by adjusting the fittings.

The design of the fittings is well thought out, so self-adjustment does not take much time. How to regulate plastic windows described in the instructions that come with them.

General information and necessary tools

To adjust PVC windows, you may need a hex wrench, pliers, flat-head and Phillips screwdrivers, and machine oil.

The most commonly used is a hex wrench, which is often called a furniture wrench. It is shaped like the letter "L".

Star-shaped attachments are rarely used, only for some types of fittings, but it is better to have them.

The fittings are attached to the window using bolts; to tighten them, you need a Phillips screwdriver. This screwdriver is used when installing the handle and adjusting it.

Any metal-plastic window works thanks to the lower and upper hinges, as well as eccentrics located around the perimeter of the sashes.

In order to know the cause of the problem and be able to eliminate it, you need to understand the operating principle of the main elements of the window. All window sashes can be adjusted in three planes, thanks to this it is possible to correctly adjust their position and pressure along the entire perimeter of the window.

Adjusting the sash position

Plastic windows usually have two hinges: top and bottom. The lower hinge serves for vertical adjustment of the sash, that is, it can be moved up or down, and it also allows horizontal adjustment, in which case the shift can be made to the right or left.

Before adjusting the lower hinge, it must be freed from the protective cap and a hexagon must be inserted into the hole.

If the window sash catches the frame from below, then it must be lifted upward; to do this, the key must be turned clockwise.

If it rubs from above, then it must be lowered; to do this, the key is turned counterclockwise.

If you need to adjust the shift to the right or left, in case of rubbing on the sides, use another adjustment hole, which is located on the side.

To get to it, you need to open the window. You can adjust the position of the sash by turning the key inserted into the hole.

If you turn it clockwise, the shift will be to the right. If you turn it counterclockwise, then to the left. The direction of rotation depends on where the frame hooks.

There is an adjuster in the top hinge, which allows you to adjust the sash to the right or left using the appropriate key.

By turning the key clockwise, the sash is moved to the right. If you turn the key counterclockwise, it moves to the left.

In which direction to shift depends on which side the sash clings to the frame.

Adjusting the sash pressure

If necessary, the sash is pressed. You can check the need with a piece of paper. To do this, insert it between the frame and the sash; it must be clamped tightly. If the sheet moves freely, then additional adjustment of the pressure is needed.

At the end of the sash there are oval eccentrics, which are part of the locking mechanism.

There are corresponding hooks on the frame. When the handle is turned to the “closed” position, a clutch occurs and the sash is pressed against the frame.

You can adjust the pressure with a wrench, and in some cases with plates located on the window sash. It depends on the design of the plastic windows.

The degree of pressure is adjusted using eccentrics. If you turn them to the left, the sash will be pressed more tightly against the frame. If you turn to the right, the pressure will be weaker. When turning the eccentrics, the distance between the frame and the eccentric changes.

The smaller this distance, the tighter the sash will be pressed. Eccentrics are located along the entire perimeter of the entire sash. Before you start making adjustments, you need to check the places where you need to do this.

It is necessary to turn the eccentrics literally a few millimeters so as not to press the sash too hard when closing. Strong pressure can lead to rapid wear of the seals. The ovals must be placed in the same position.

If the adjustment with eccentrics does not work, you can adjust the clamp using the mating part by changing its position.

The mating part is held in place by bolts that have a hole for a hex key.

To increase the pressure, you need to move the hook in the direction of the street, while loosening the bolts. To loosen the clamp, the hook must be moved towards the room.

The pressure can be adjusted with bolts located in the hinges if a transom system is used. Having freed the lower canopy from the cap, you can see the adjustment bolts. The bolt for adjusting the pressure is at an angle of 90 degrees to the plane of the window.

It is better to adjust it when the sash is closed.

To press the sash more firmly, you need to insert the hexagon into the bolt and turn it clockwise. If you need to loosen the clamp, then turn the key counterclockwise.

The pressure can be adjusted depending on the time of year.

In summer, the pressure can be loosened to provide better ventilation of the room. IN winter period The pressure can be made stronger to retain heat better. If you adjust the pressure correctly, you can extend the life of the seals, since they will wear out less.

Replacing the handle and fixing problems

If the handle is cracked or you decide to replace it with a handle with a lock so that children cannot open the window, you need to follow certain steps. There is a base underneath the handle.

It must be slightly pulled back and rotated 90 degrees. Screws will open that need to be removed.

When the handle is installed and the screws are screwed in, the base returns to its previous position.

If the handle is difficult to turn, this may be due to lack of lubrication or sagging of the sash. In the first case, you can purchase special oil or use machine oil and lubricate all components.

It is useful to lubricate regularly. If the reason is sagging of the sash, then it must be adjusted using the adjustments located in the hinges, as described above.

There are situations when the handle is placed in the closed position, but the window does not close. This happens when the window is locked.

The lock is installed so that the handle can only be turned when the window is closed, thus protecting the mechanism from damage.

Lockers differ from one manufacturer to another, but are always located at the end of the sash under the handle. To unlock the handle, you need to press the locking tab.

Adjusting plastic windows yourself is quite simple, especially since instructions are always included with the windows, but adjustments must be made carefully so as not to overdo it.

It is important to monitor the condition of plastic windows and correct all problems in a timely manner, then they will serve for a long time. It is advisable to carry out adjustments twice a year when changing seasons.

Do-it-yourself adjustment of plastic windows may be required at any time, despite the guaranteed long service life of PVC structures. This simple operation can be easily performed by any home craftsman if you understand some of its subtleties.

Modern plastic windows are made using massive and truly reliable fittings. It guarantees trouble-free operation of structures for many years. But even highly reliable mechanisms require periodic maintenance and adjustment. It is possible to perform such operations with your own hands. It is enough to stock up on simple working tools and understand the key components of PVC structures.

Adjustment of PVC windows

The plastic window is adjusted using a screwdriver (Phillips) designed for several different sizes, a set of hexagons, star and cross-shaped nozzles marked TX or T, machine oil and pliers. No other devices will be needed. In most cases, it is possible to adjust windows using a hexagon (popularly called a furniture wrench). Such a tool may have the shape of the letter S. But more often it is made in the form of an L-shaped metal rod that can easily handle.

Star-type nozzles are used infrequently. With their help, it is possible to restore the functionality of a plastic window with your own hands using rarely found types of fittings. In other cases, all problems that prevent the window from closing or opening can be solved using an ordinary Phillips screwdriver. There are several points for customizing window designs. They are the same for all PVC products, regardless of which company manufactured them. The adjustment points are located:

  • In the area of the upper loop. This point makes it possible to adjust the top of the window sashes horizontally.
  • In the bottom loop. A point for restoring normal horizontal operation of the lower corner of the sash, as well as its vertical position.
  • In the locking (lower) journal and in the area of the eccentric journal. This point is used to calibrate the pressing force of the window sash.

If the indicated points are deformed, it is prohibited to adjust the windows yourself. In such cases, you need to contact specialists. Sometimes, after long-term use of window structures, they become clogged with dust and small debris, which should be removed and then the planned work should be carried out.

It is advisable to carry out technical inspection of PVC structures regularly. Such an inspection of the condition of the windows will not be superfluous. But they need to be adjusted directly as needed. Note that even in cases where the initial configuration of the structures was carried out to the highest possible quality, certain problems may arise when using them. They are usually associated with violations of the tightness and integrity (structural) of windows, breakage of the fasteners used, and violations of the recommended operating rules for plastic products.

Strengthening the window handle

By independently adjusting PVC window structures, you can solve the following problems:

  • Sagging of the sash (its lower part). A common failure. This leads to the fact that the sash clings to the frame when opening. The problem can be easily solved. You need to calibrate the lift of the sash (either vertically or horizontally), and the latter will close perfectly again, without hitting anything in its path.
  • Blowing is a noticeable draft from under the heat-insulating layer. IN in this case You will need to adjust the sash pressure.
  • Loose handle. This kind of malfunction occurs quite often. The situation is corrected by tightening a small plate, which is located under the plug.
  • Adhesion to the frame of the middle part of the sash, which is why the window does not close well. In this case, adjusting the sash lift helps. The adjusted element will again function flawlessly.

Another common problem is difficulty turning the window handle. This problem occurs either due to a lack of lubrication or due to improper lowering of the sash. You will either need to lubricate the problematic product with machine oil, or disassemble the handle and adjust the stroke of its roller. Next, we will tell you in more detail how to properly adjust plastic windows in order to solve all the problems described.

First, let's look at how to adjust a window product vertically. Everything here is elementary. Find the location of the hinged bottom hinge, open the plug under which it is hidden. Insert the hexagon into the special hole and begin to carefully rotate it clockwise. This will cause the sash to rise. If you rotate the tool in the opposite direction, the sash will lower. Windows are calibrated horizontally in the same way. This setting allows you to decide various problems with plastic structures.

Plastic window calibration

If you need to fix a slight bevel of a window or a shift in its frame, you will need to remove the cover from the bottom hinge and use a furniture key according to the scheme already described above. Horizontal calibration makes it possible to adjust the window from both the inside and outside. In other words, you can easily adjust the window structure in a closed or open state. In practice, everything looks like this. Insert the hexagon and turn it.

When rotating counterclockwise, the lower section of the window structure will begin to lower. If you turn the adjusting key in the opposite direction, the bottom of the window will begin to rise.

Horizontal adjustments can also be made on the upper hinge of the structure. This need arises if a plastic window does not close well. Here you need to know one nuance. Such calibration is carried out only when the window is open. The principle of setting remains unchanged. Let us add that the shift of the sashes with the described repair methods is carried out by no more than 2 mm.

The seal located around the perimeter of PVC products loses its original volume over time. This causes gaps to appear in the heat and. A similar situation can arise due to temperature changes outside. Some people immediately turn to specialists for help. They advise replacing the seal. As a result, restoring the window structure costs a pretty penny. But the problem can be solved more simply. It is enough to slightly change the clamping force to return the window to its heat and sound insulation characteristics.

At the end of the window sashes there are special oval cylinders. These protruding elements are called eccentrics (or trunnions). You will find them in the slots of the metal plugs. On the window frame there are hooks into which the above pins enter when you turn the window handle. You can change the pressing force of the sash in two ways - by moving the hooks and turning the trunnions. You need to turn the protruding section of the eccentric towards the outer surface of the PVC structure (if you need to reduce the amount of force) or towards the inner surface (when you need to increase the force).

Do-it-yourself PVC window setup

Take into account! The calibration methods for fittings from different manufacturers differ from each other. There are three ways to adjust the clamping force:

  1. If there is a special slot on the trunnion, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the last one and turn the eccentric slightly.
  2. If there is no slot, you need to remove the pin with pliers and then turn it.
  3. Grab the eccentric with pliers, lightly tighten it, and then turn it.

In cases where it is impossible to adjust the trunnions, you can try to calibrate the hooks. They are usually secured with two bolts. You need to loosen these hardware with a hexagon and move the adjustable element (hook) towards the street (if you want to increase the pressure) or towards the room (to reduce the pressure).

Experts do not advise excessively clamping the window frame and its sash. The design in this case will not close and open better. But early wear of the seal is guaranteed. If you want your home to always have an ideal microclimate, readjust the sash pressure twice a year. Tighten them tighter before the onset of cold weather (then in winter the cold air will not penetrate into the room at all) and loosen them in the spring so that a small air flow enters the home.

Handles on plastic products are subject to heaviest load. We constantly open and close windows and do not always do it carefully. The result of such carelessness is the loosening of the handle. Fixing this situation is very simple. Find a rectangular trim under the loose part, pry it up with your fingers (do not use metal tools, as they can damage the edge of the plug or even the profile itself) and turn it 90°. Bolts will open in front of you. Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten them, then return the trim to its place.

Self-repair of PVC windows

It is more difficult to cope with a handle that does not reach any given position or noticeably jams. First, dismantle the closing mechanism, thoroughly clean its internal parts, and then treat them with oil (machine oil). If this does not solve the problem, try reducing the clamping force on the sash. You will need to adjust the hooks and trunnions. We discussed this technique in detail in the previous section of the article.

Sometimes the handle gets stuck. There is an opinion that such a malfunction definitely requires replacing the device that closes the window. This is wrong. Moreover, you don’t even have to dismantle the handle to wedge it. The problem in this case arises because the locking device on the PVC structure does not work correctly. The problem can be corrected simply - at the end of the sash, find the locking lever (it can be made in the form of a clip or in the form of a small tongue) and carefully move it away. This is all. The functionality of the pen has been restored!

And one last thing. Hinged PVC windows are equipped with two hinges. These elements can be calibrated independently using a screw. A similar operation is performed to improve the functionality of the loops. By turning the screw in different directions, you adjust the degree of their pressure, which means you can choose the optimal ventilation mode for your home. The adjustment range for the hinges is within 2.5 mm. Now you know how to properly adjust a plastic window. Don’t waste your family budget by calling experts to repair PVC structures. After all, you can solve almost all problems with windows yourself.

Plastic windows have long ceased to be an indicator of luxury. Today, modern windows are considered a kind of indicator of the level of comfort at which your home remains protected not only from the cold, but also from noise. But for this you need to follow several rules in maintenance and care.

And if for high-quality and correct installation of a double-glazed window it is necessary to seek help from specialists, then all other periodic maintenance work can be carried out independently. And for this it is not necessary to have special knowledge and skills. It is enough just to understand the design features and be able to handle the tools.

Peculiarities

The design feature of plastic windows is the ability to adjust the mechanism during maintenance. And this procedure may be required for any window, regardless of the service life and quality of the fittings. It is important to periodically check the serviceability of the opening and closing mechanisms. And also, when the season changes, inspect the condition of the fittings - the durability and functionality of the windows depends on this, which will most likely save you from large-scale repairs in the future.

And being able to do all the work yourself is a useful skill. In fact, it is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

Plastic windows have many advantages:

  • optimal level of sound insulation - modern double-glazed windows protect living spaces from extraneous sounds from the street;
  • retains heat - the plastic frame retains up to 20% of the heat in the room;
  • excellent tightness - which allows you to protect the room from drafts, and there is no need to additionally insulate the frames before the onset of cold weather;
  • plastic does not deform under constant humidity and temperature changes;

  • fire safety - the plastic from which modern windows are made does not support combustion;
  • attractive appearance and many modifications - the customer has the opportunity to choose any size, color and style of the window frame;
  • ease of cleaning - to maintain cleanliness it is necessary to periodically wipe the surface of the frame with a damp cloth;
  • retains its original appearance for a long time - the surface does not fade in the sun, does not change color and does not require periodic painting;
  • multifunctionality - a modern plastic window also protects from insects and bright sunlight.

However, it is worth noting some disadvantages of plastic windows:

  • non-compliance with installation technology can shorten the service life of the window;
  • unlike natural wood, plastic is not able to maintain optimal levels of humidity and temperature in the room;
  • moving structural elements require proper care;
  • over a long period of operation, replacement of fittings and insulation is required.

During operation, you may encounter many problems. The window can cling to fittings, let air through and cause drafts in the room. And most often, to fix the problem you only need to tighten the mounting screws and treat the fittings with oil. And in order to determine the cause of the malfunction, it is necessary to roughly understand the design features.

A plastic window consists of standard parts.

  • Plastic frame– inside which the reinforcing fortification is hidden. The entire structure must withstand enormous loads, so during the production process the frame undergoes quality tests. For reliable fixation steel profile, self-tapping screws are used.
  • Doors– the sealed design of the doors also has a steel profile. All moving elements are made of reliable materials, which guarantees normal closing and opening of the window.

  • Double-glazed windows– depending on the requirements, manufacturers offer windows with one, two, three or more double-glazed windows: between the two glasses an air chamber is formed with a special gaseous substance, which is necessary to create excellent thermal characteristics.
  • Accessories- these are all the devices and parts located in the sash and frame, which are necessary for fixing the double-glazed windows, handles and controlling the sash.
  • Sealant– necessary for hermetically closing the window. Insulation and sealing elements protect the room from moisture and cold air from the street. Over time, the quality of the seal may deteriorate due to natural wear and mechanical deformation.

  • Glazing beads- these are plastic parts that are necessary to hold the glass in the frame.
  • Impost– necessary to strengthen the structure if the window frame has more than one structural element. This element is fixed in the window opening and divides it into several parts. But recently, manufacturers have improved window frames and can offer customers large windows without additional fixing profiles.

Modern plastic windows differ in quality, number of double-glazed windows, strength, various modes and price. And each category requires proper care.

Modes

Modern manufacturers offer PVC windows with two modes of opening the sash: swinging and ventilation. The opening angle of the flap can also be adjusted by built-in limiters. A common problem with windows with several modes is the simultaneous opening of the sash and the opening of the micro-ventilation mode.

It can occur when the open sash is switched to ventilation mode by turning the handle up. In this case, the sash is fixed only on one lower hinge, and the upper part sags and falls under its own weight.

This problem must be solved as soon as possible, otherwise the lower hinge may not withstand the load and break. To do this, you need to press on the top of the sash and try to press the window tightly against the frame. In this case, the handle must be turned up to the ventilation mode. Then, after the sash is completely closed in the frame, the handle is lowered to the swing mode. If necessary, you can independently adjust the lock on the sash. After this, the window closes.

But manufacturers of plastic windows also offer sliding structures. Such doors are best suited for installation on a balcony. The main advantage of sliding windows is that they save space; the windows are opened not by turning, but by moving them parallel to the frame. In this case, the window sill area can be used more efficiently.

Such windows do not require special care and will last the same as their classic counterparts, from 10 years. They retain heat in the room and prevent street noise from entering the apartment. Another advantage of these designs is the ability to move the mosquito net, like the frames themselves: the net can move parallel to the frame to the right and left.

And you can also additionally install special valves on the window for air flow or protection for children. In this case, you can be sure that the child will not be able to accidentally open the window.

Required Tools

Adjusting a plastic window at home is not a difficult task. In this case, it is important to have basic skills in using tools. Before work, you should prepare the necessary kit. The choice of tools largely depends on the internal mechanism of the window.

To adjust a plastic window you will need:

  • pliers or pliers;
  • hex wrench No. 4;
  • flat and figured Phillips screwdrivers;
  • a set of star keys;
  • scissors for seal;
  • putty knife;
  • machine oil, silicone grease or WD-40 spray.

In some cases it is necessary to use different tools. For example, it is better to use pliers to turn oval-shaped eccentrics, and a hex wrench or screwdriver to turn adjusting screws with an internal slot. While only a Phillips screwdriver is used to replace the handle.

A spatula will only be needed if the straightening plate is faulty. But if the warranty is still valid, you should contact the manufacturer to have the problem resolved.

Although you can install the straightening plates yourself. The main thing is that the glass unit does not rest against the plate, otherwise the glass may not withstand the pressure and crack.

How to adjust it yourself?

Many people simply do not know or forget that plastic windows require periodic maintenance. Adjustment and adjustment of double-glazed windows may be necessary if a poor-quality installation was carried out. Just like natural wear and tear can make itself felt within several years even after a quality installation. And even an experienced master may have questions when adjusting the window.

You can read detailed instructions on how to fix the main problems you can fix yourself.

  • Friction is felt when opening or closing a window, or the sash touches the frame - in this case, the reason may be loose hinges. This problem can arise when the building shrinks or the fittings become loose. To eliminate the problem, it is necessary to adjust the upper and lower hinges horizontally. For this job you will need a hex wrench. Insert the key into the top window hinge and turn clockwise to adjust the height distance from the sash to the window frame. At the same time, the lower part of the opposite element will noticeably lower. To adjust the lower hinge, you will also need a hexagon, but the same work must be done from the outside. The shifts average 2 mm.

  • Draft and blowing windows– cold air enters the apartment through the frame insulation. During operation, the window may lose its seal due to wear of the rubber seal. Manufacturers provide a guarantee of about 15 years for high-quality seals. If you neglect to monitor the technical condition, the seal may wear out. To replace it, carefully remove the defective seal from the grooves and attach a new one.

  • The handle turns hard– the problem may be a malfunction of the mechanism or lack of lubrication. In this case, first you should treat the mechanism with machine oil. To do this, turn the handle at a right angle, unscrew the screws and remove the plastic decorative trim. Under the rectangular plate there are bolts that are tightened with a screwdriver. If the mechanism periodically jams or the handle is difficult to turn, lubricate all elements of the turning mechanism. If there are visible defects, or if after treating the fittings with lubricant the problem has not been eliminated, replace the handle with a new one and check the technical condition once a year.

  • If the handle is stuck in ventilation mode– most often the reason lies in the jamming of the mechanism called “scissors” in the upper corner. The problem can be dealt with only after removing the sash from its hinges. To do this, carefully remove the decorative plugs and unscrew the screws. After this, inspect the ventilation fixing mechanism, find and try to adjust the elements that have flown off. Replace all the elements and check the functionality of the “scissors”. They should be adjacent to the top loop. After this, install the sash in place in the window opening.
  • Tilt&Turn Problems are eliminated quite simply. If the window is opened in two modes at once, you need to quickly return the sash to its place with a slight pressure and lower the handle down to close the mode.

  • Most problems can usually be resolved by adjusting the top and bottom hinges of the window.. To check the pressure of the sash to the frame, you can hold a lit candle to the window: if the fire goes out, it means that the sash needs to be adjusted. In this case, it is necessary to check the trunnions - these are small round-shaped parts that are located on the sash and regulate the pressure. To make the contact between the sash and frame more dense, it is necessary to turn the mechanisms clockwise, and to loosen the pressure, turn them counterclockwise. This adjustment should be carried out twice a year when the season changes. In winter, the window must be tightly closed so that cold street air does not enter the apartment. In the summer heat, on the contrary, the pressure should be minimal so that fresh air can enter the room even with the window closed.

During the first year of window operation, adjustments should be minimal. It is important to remember that with loose pressure the window will last longer than with maximum tightness.

What to do if it doesn't close?

Quite often a problem arises when the sash stops closing. And this is not surprising, especially if the window was installed 5-6 years ago. In such cases, minor repairs are required. And fortunately, you can do this job yourself. But first you need to understand the cause of the malfunction.

A window may stop closing for several reasons:

  • manufacturing design defect;
  • poor quality fittings;
  • neglect of installation rules during installation;
  • sash misalignment;

  • The seal needs to be replaced;
  • malfunction of the opening and closing mechanism;
  • debris, dirt or dust.

If you cannot close the sash tightly, you should first make sure that there are no elements obstructing this. Another problem may be sash misalignment. In this case, the window will cling to the corner of the frame, and as a result of the distortion, a gap will appear. If one of the corners of the sash is sagging, it is necessary to adjust the bolts on the hinges. To do this, you need to adjust the angle of the sash vertically and horizontally.

And if you cannot turn the handle, then perhaps the problem lies in the blocker located on the side at the bottom of the sash. Adjust the position of the lock yourself and try turning the handle. After these manipulations, the problem should be resolved.

Replacement of accessories

There are a large number of different elements located on the end part of the sash. The fittings play almost the main role in the quality of the window and are responsible for trouble-free operation throughout the entire service life. And the service life of the window depends on the quality of the fittings.

Window fittings are divided into three types.

  • Budget– often used by developers in new buildings. Such fittings are offered domestic producers, and it is usually limited in functionality. For example, windows with budget fittings do not switch to different seasonal modes and do not have the function of opening for micro-ventilation.

  • Standard– produced by both domestic and foreign companies.
  • Specialized– used by various manufacturers for windows installed in crowded places: airports, shopping centers, administrative buildings.

All types of fittings differ from each other in quality, design complexity and reliability. When working with replacing and adjusting fittings, you must be careful. Any small breakdown can cost the owner of the apartment dearly in the future.

The following tips and recommendations will help you fix plastic window problems without the help of specialists. But the main thing is to carry out all work without pressure and effort, otherwise there is a possibility of larger breakdowns. Find out what else you need to know to adjust a plastic window yourself.

  • In some cases, it may be necessary to adjust the window frame vertically. To do this, you need to remove the decorative plastic cap from the bottom hinge and use a hexagon to adjust the position of the frame. Circular movements clockwise will raise the sash, and counterclockwise will lower it.

  • Once every 5 years, it is necessary to clean the fittings in hard-to-reach places from accumulated dust and dirt. This process cannot be called labor-intensive, but it will be much easier to do this work together. To do this, you will need to remove the sash from both hinges and remove the overhead elements. All parts must be cleaned and the moving elements lubricated with oil. After complete drying, the fittings are installed in their places, and the structure is assembled in the same sequence.
  • It is not recommended to wash windows using abrasive cleaners and solutions. To clean the surface, it is best to use a soft cloth and a special product for plastic windows.

  • Monitor the quality of the rubber seal - it needs to be replaced periodically. It should not have cracks or cuts. To make the seal last longer, periodically inspect the window and lubricate the rubber with silicone grease. Without proper care, the seal will become unusable after 5-6 years of operation.
  • If the window is used for a long time, the seal may need to be replaced. This need is not always associated with poor quality rubber or inadequate care; there is also such a thing as physical wear and tear. Perhaps even an ordinary person can cope with replacing the seal. You need to purchase a new rubber seal from a hardware store and carefully remove the old one from the surface of the sash. It is better to start all work from the lower or upper corner. After this, the surface and any open grooves are thoroughly cleaned. Check in advance that the amount of new rubber is exactly enough for the entire window; the seal cannot be stretched.

It is very important to know how the fittings of plastic windows are adjusted and with what tools.

I'm not even talking about the fact that my house had poorly installed and adjusted plastic windows, which not only didn't open and close well, they also let in cold in the winter and warm air in the summer. Well, tell me, what’s the point of plastic windows anyway? Most easy way To check if they are blown through, put your hand near the cracks. And also open the Euro package and see if it opens or closes on its own, then this is also considered a defect. In this story you can see how you can adjust the Euro package yourself. They also need to be adjusted to the seasons: summer and winter.

How to adjust plastic windows yourself?

Modern plastic windows, thanks to their current high quality characteristics and ease of use, have easily brought coziness and comfort into our everyday life. This level is achieved not only thanks to high-level sound and heat insulation characteristics, but also thanks to a carefully thought out system of various mechanisms responsible for the quality of operation.

During operation, a system of mechanisms, like any other mechanism, requires periodic maintenance and performance monitoring. In addition, sometimes minor or serious malfunctions may occur, which over time can make it difficult or even impossible to operate the window frame. But most of all the malfunctions that arise during the operation of windows can be eliminated without resorting to professional service, since all this can actually be done with one’s own hands.

Modern window fittings have quite convenient mechanisms with which you can adjust the Euro package. If you have the bare minimum set of tools, then within a couple of minutes you can get your plastic window back into working condition, saving a large amount of money.

Malfunctions during operation of plastic windows

  1. When closing, the door of the Euro package touches the frame from the side or bottom;
  2. the sash does not fit tightly to the frame;
  3. the euro package does not want to close if the window is blocked when the handle is turned to the “closed” mode while the shutter is open;
  4. the window does not want to close when the window sash is closed and the handle is not turned;
  5. handle breakage;

  • screwdrivers (flat and Phillips).

A large number of modern windows have in their design the ability to adjust the window parts in three planes at once. This detail makes it possible to achieve the most correct position of the window part in the frame, also providing an optimal level of pressure on the seals absolutely along the perimeter of the window sash.

Individual elements may differ in appearance, depending on the hardware manufacturer. This also applies to adjustment methods and the tools used, but in general specifics, the window sashes adjustment scheme has the following form:

Let's look at what kind of actions need to be performed in order to troubleshoot problems in each of the specific cases:

When closing, the window sash touches the frame from the side or bottom.

Adjusting plastic windows

Now we will move on to direct instructions for adjusting plastic windows. It is necessary to move the sash up or to the side of the upper hinge. To do this you need to do the following:

  1. Open the sash
  2. When using a hexagon, turn the adjusting screw, which is located near the top hinge at the very end of the sash, clockwise three to five turns
  3. Close
  4. Remove the cap from the bottom hinge
  5. Insert a hexagon into the bottom loop and make three to five turns clockwise
  6. Check the free play, and if absolutely necessary, repeat the adjustment until the problem is eliminated.

The window frame does not fit tightly to the frame

You need to move the sash to the location of the hinges. To do this you should:

  1. In the case where the side of the window part only touches the bottom of the frame, then you will only need to move it to the side of the lower hinge. You can do this under the bottom hinge using the adjusting screw.
  2. If the side of the sash touches the frame along its entire height, then it should also be moved to the location of the upper hinge. The course of the manipulation is described in the previous situation.

On the side of the window handle, at the side end of the sash, there is a system of eccentrics that regulates the tightness of the pressure to the sash frame. Externally, they may differ, depending on the manufacturer, but the principle of operation is identical.

You can use pliers or a hexagon to rotate the eccentrics, which can create exactly the degree of pressing of the sash against the frame that you need.

Adjustment summer winter plastic windows

  • If there is an urgent need to adjust the degree of pressing of the sash to the frame from the hinge side, then this should be done using the adjusting screw on the lower hinge.
  • In the case of a tilt-and-turn sash, additional adjustment of the sash pressure by the top hinge is necessary.
  • In order to get to the adjustment bolt located on the scissors at the location of the top hinge, you should open the window, then turn the handle to the ventilation mode, having first pressed the lock.
  • By rotating the blocker clockwise, you press it against the frame, and if you rotate the blocker counterclockwise, on the contrary, you loosen the pressure.

Some types of fittings are adjusted using specially designed responds, which are located on the window frame on the side of the handle.
The position of the responses can be adjusted using hexagons. To ensure stronger pressing of the sash against the frame, you should move the sash closer to the street. On the frame on the side of the window hinges there are clamping mechanisms that are adjusted with a hexagon. The sash will be pressed against the frame more strongly when the tongue is pulled out more strongly.

The window does not close if it is locked when the handle is turned to the “closed” mode while it is open

In order to avoid damage to the hardware mechanisms, the window handle should be turned only when the window sash is closed. To avoid accidental closures, special types of locks are provided that prevent the handle from being turned when the window is open. Such blockers are located under the handle at the end of the sash and come in different types, depending on the manufacturer of the fittings. To unlock the handle, you will need to press the above-mentioned lock.

The window does not want to close when the sash itself is closed and the handle is not turned

If the window is closed, but the handle itself does not turn, this indicates that the locking clutch did not work with the mating element on the frame. There are two ways to resolve this problem:

  1. Move the sash slightly to the side where the counter part of the lock is located, using the adjusting screw located under the bottom hinge.
  2. Loosen the fastening a little and insert a thin plate of some hard material between the window frame and the reciprocal part of the window blocker itself.

In order to replace the handle, you should pull the handle cover slightly towards you and then turn the cover perpendicularly. Then you should unscrew the screws and remove the old window handle. After installing the new handle, the trim should be returned to its original position. Window handles can be purchased either from us or in hardware or construction stores.

The window handle turns, but with difficulty

Most common cause insufficient lubrication. It is recommended to lubricate the hardware mechanisms once a year or even more often. In such cases, machine oil or aerosol lubricant, for example, WD-40, is used.

I would also like to remind you that even in the absence of obvious defects, the mechanisms should be lubricated and the technical condition of all systems of fitting mechanisms should be monitored once a year or more often.
Despite all the listed elementaryness of the above-mentioned methods of troubleshooting and window adjustment, it is necessary to begin these manipulations when you clearly understand what exactly needs to be done and how. Otherwise, it would be more advisable to turn to specialists.

Nowadays, the popularity of plastic windows is no longer in doubt, because they not only have high quality, but also an affordable price. Not to mention that they are easy to use and provide excellent noise protection. But despite this, even the best quality windows require maintenance, so from time to time you need to call a specialist to adjust them. Many people wonder: “Is it possible adjustment of plastic windows without calling the master? It's actually not as difficult as it might seem. Therefore, after reading this article, you will be able to cope with minor problems yourself. Remember that this way you save not only money, but also time. Now let's move on to the instructions themselves and consider the main problems.

Most often you may encounter the following types of malfunctions, which you can easily eliminate on your own:

  • When closing, the sash touches the frame from the side or bottom
  • The sash does not fit tightly enough to the frame
  • Wear of striker plates
  • The handle is blocked when the sash is open in the “closed” mode, the window does not close
  • The sash is closed, but the window does not close, the handle does not turn
  • The handle is broken
  • The handle is very difficult to turn

For repairs we may need the following tool:

  • Pliers
  • Hexagon (4 mm)
  • Screwdrivers (phillips and flathead)
  • Set of "stars"

General principles for adjusting window sashes

The sashes of almost all modern PVC windows can be adjusted in three planes, thanks to which you can achieve the correct position of the sashes in the frame and achieve the optimal degree of pressing of the seals along the entire perimeter of the sash.

The methods for adjusting the sash fittings, the appearance of its individual elements and the tool used for adjustment may vary depending on the manufacturer, but in general the general adjustment scheme looks as shown in the figures below.

Picture 1 - General principles PVC window adjustments

Figure 2 - General scheme for adjusting a plastic window

Figure 3 - Various window adjustment options

Now let's look at what needs to be done to fix the problem in each of the above cases.

How and how to adjust a plastic window for various malfunctions

1. When closing, the sash touches the frame from below

In this case, you need to move the sash in the direction of the top hinge and up. The procedure is approximately as follows:

2. When closing, the sash touches the side of the frame

In this case, you need to move the sash in the direction of the hinges, to do this:

3. Wear of striker plates

To check the striker bars, open the window and inspect them. Most often there is one strip on each side along the perimeter of the window. If wear is noticeable on one of them, this may indicate that there is unevenness in the fit of the window in the frame. In order to solve the problem, you need to open the window, remove the plastic plugs from the adjusting bolts (they are located on the lower and upper hinges, on the same side as the sash) and use a hex key (four mm) to loosen the bolts themselves. After this, adjust the position of the top half of the window. The adjusting screw will help you with this. First, you need to adjust everything relative to the frame “left - right”, and then go to the bottom screw and adjust the movement “up and down”. It is very easy to monitor the accuracy of the adjustment. To do this, you just need to open and close the window until you understand that the sash fits tightly and evenly into the frame.

4. The sash does not fit tightly enough to the frame

On the side of the handle on the side end of the sash there is a system of eccentrics, with the help of which the tightness of the pressure to the sash frame is adjusted. They may have different appearance depending on the manufacturer, but the principle of operation is the same in all cases.

Figure 7 — Adjusting the pins of plastic windows

By rotating the eccentrics with pliers or a hexagon, you can adjust the required degree of pressing of the sash to the frame. In summer it is recommended to apply weak pressure, and in winter - strong pressure. If you need to adjust the degree of pressing of the window sash to the frame from the hinge side, this can be done using the adjusting screw located on the lower hinge (Figure 8).

Figure 8 — Adjusting the window pressure

If this sash is a tilt-and-turn sash, then you can additionally adjust the sash pressure using the top hinge. To get to the adjusting bolt located on the scissors near the top hinge (Figure 9), you need to open the sash and then, after first pressing the lock (Figure 11), set the handle to the ventilation mode. If you need to press the sash against the frame, you need to rotate the bolt clockwise; accordingly, you can loosen the pressure by rotating the bolt counterclockwise.

Figure 9 — Adjusting the pressure of a PVC window

Some types of fittings are regulated exclusively with the help of responders located on the side of the handle (Figure 10 - a). The position of the strike plates is adjusted using a hexagon. To increase the pressure of the window sash to the frame, you need to move the bar towards the street. The frame on the hinge side also has hexagon-adjustable clamping mechanisms (Figure 10 - b, c). The more you extend the tongue, the more the sash will be pressed against the frame.

Figure 10 — Adjusting the window pressure using rivets

5. The handle is blocked when the sash is open in the “closed” mode, the window does not close

In order to prevent damage to the hardware mechanisms, the handle can only be turned when the sash is closed. To prevent accidental turning of the handle when the sash is open, there are special lockers located under the handle at the end of the sash. Depending on the manufacturer, they also come in various types(Figure 11). Before unlocking the handle, you need to press the lock.

Figure 11 — Locking in “closed” mode

6. The sash is closed, but the window does not close - the handle does not turn

If the handle does not turn after closing the sash, this means that the clutch of the lock with the counter element located on the frame does not work. This problem can be solved in two ways:

  1. Using the adjusting screw located under the lower hinge, slightly move the sash in the direction of the counter part of the lock (Figure 6)
  2. Having slightly loosened the fastening, insert any thin plate of hard material between the counter part of the blocker and the frame.

7. The handle is broken

In order to replace the handle of a plastic window, you need to slightly pull the handle cover towards you and turn it 90 degrees (Figure 12). Next, unscrew the screws, remove the old handle and install a new one in its place, set the trim to its original position.

Figure 12 - The window handle is broken - how to remove and replace?

8. The handle is very difficult to turn

This usually happens due to insufficient lubrication. To prevent such a situation, it is necessary to lubricate the fitting mechanisms at least once a year. For these purposes, you can use aerosol lubricants or machine oil.

It is worth noting that monitoring the technical condition and lubrication of all mechanisms of window fittings must be carried out even in the absence of visible defects at least once a year.

If you are interested adjustment of plastic windows, It's useful to remember that:

  • it is necessary to periodically check the condition of the rubber seals to prevent their wear;
  • if you remove decorative plastic plugs, do it carefully, as they are very fragile; make sure not to deform them or crush them during the main work;
  • if your frame or window opening itself is deformed, you will not be able to adjust the windows yourself;
  • If you are not sure that you can do everything yourself, it is better to entrust the work to a trusted specialist. This way you can be sure that everything is done with high quality and you won’t need to redo anything.

I suggest watching a video that clearly shows how to adjust a plastic window with your own hands.
